When was DUCK established?
In 1995, when a charter school in downtown Phoenix lost its funding for an after-school program for the kids. The church responded and , in just two weeks, Downtown Urban Commmunity for Kids (DUCK) was born. In March, 1996 DUCK Incorporated as a 501(c)[3] nonprofit corporation and is fully independent with a Board of Directors whose members are from a cross-section of professions, economies, cultures and Valley Geography.
What needs in the community prompted the formation of DUCK?
DUCK was formed to keep the kids off the street, away from drugs, gangs and violence, giving them the opportunity to beak the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. The term "Five Critical Hours" (3pm - 8pm) - refers to the primary hours fo juvenile crime and gang recruitment. The zip codes where the DUCK kids live have the highest rate of gang activity in the state according to state statistics. In Arizona, once a youth has turned 16 or has finished 8th grade, they are not required to be in school. In 95% of the DUCK homes there is limited or no English spoken; 55% of the families are single parent homes.
Participate in the yearly Spring golf tournament to benefit DUCK. Watch the church bulletin for information.
